In graduate school I specifically chose the study of Marriage and Family Psychology, which is a passion of mine, and have pursued this specialized area of focus until the present. During and after grad school, I worked in seven different and diversified mental health agencies over a 12 year span. Through this work I was able gain a greater understanding of how to help people struggling with the effects of emotional pain as it relates to disrupted connection and attachment.
During the course of my journey, I provided many different forms of therapy, all well researched and validated, including becoming a Certified EMDR Therapist, focused on Trauma and Ego State Therapy, Systems Therapy as well as providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for couples, families and individuals. In 2003, during the time I was to become an EMDRIA Certified Therapist, I began my training with Dr. Susan Johnson, the director and founder of the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy at the Ottawa Couple and Family Institute. There I began my initial externship in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples and families and continued my EFT journey by becoming a Certified EFT Therapist.
As a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist (EFT), I help couples connect utlizing the nine step, three stage EFT approach. This is further enhanced, by providing compassion and support in order for couples and family members to feel held and nurtured as they grow towards safety and connection with one another. Through the process of EFT, and in combination with a safe nurturing therapeutic approach, partners are assisted to feel more deeply held and better able to share their deeper feelings more safely with one another.
My husband, a retired U.S.M.C. LTCOL, and I have been happily married for 38 years and have greatly benefited from EFT along the way to help strengthen our own marriage. While no marriage is perfect, we continue to grow in the process of connection together.
